2008 NFL Preseason “Quick Analysis”
NFC Detroit Lions
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Stadium: Ford Field
Coach: Rod Marinelli
NFL Championships: 1935, 1952, 1953 & 1957
After another letdown in Detroit last year, the Lions have retooled just enough to promise an exciting team for 2008.
The Detroit Lions need to fix just about everything to compete for the wide open NFC North division title. The offense needs John Kitna to keep defying his age and for Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson to emerge as the deadly duo every lions fan no they can be.
Veteran Tatum Bell and rookie Kevin Smith are expected to compete for the job as the offensive line learns the new zone blocking scheme form new head coach Rod Marinelli.
The defense has to wonder if last season is going to repeat itself. With linebacker Ernie Sims coming off surgery, the team could be in some real trouble down the road as the schedule wears on.
Detroit Lions fans could still see the emergence of a potent offense, like the one that occurred in flashes last season, so tickets to Ford Field are still on every football fans' wish list.
Some Detroit Lions history: The Detroit Lions franchise traces its origin to the Portsmouth Spartans, a team based in Ohio that entered the NFL in 1930. In 1932 the Spartans played in the league's first postseason game, losing 9-0 to the Chicago Bears. In 1934 the club was sold to radio station owner George Richards, who moved the team to Detroit and renamed it the Lions. In 1935 the Lions earned their first NFL title, shutting out 3 of 12 regular-season opponents and soundly defeating the New York Giants in the championship game.
